The following is a 200 word post inspired by a discussion with @TomCopy about self-promotion, blogging and ego.

Surely there’s no common ground dark art of marketing and the creative art of poetry? You might be surprised to hear that as a blogger, you need to learn from poets.

The following is inspired by @BobbleBardsley challenging me to write 200 words or fewer on grammar-dinosaurs.

Names and titles are important. When you’ve got a split-second to make an impression, you need to explain clearly and concisely just what it is that you can do for a client.

Yarr and avast there me hearties!

It be International Talk Like a Pirate Day again, and that can mean only two things: Firstly, it be meaning that people across the globe will be saying “it be” when they mean “it is”. And secondly, it be meaning that I be divulgin’ the most well kept secret in all the pirate code. The dusty pirate’s map to the treasure that be bloggin’ success!

It’s hard to break into an already crowded blogosphere. If you want to do it, you’re going to need to stand out from the blogging crowd.

How much of your time is spent on social networking sites? With multiple networks to maintain, have you really got time to waste on frivolous or low-quality user accounts?

It sounds like you’re nice and comfy. Which is a shame if you’re about to start writing. Because if you want to write well, being comfortable isn’t good for you.

The advert above just won a Silver Lion at the Cannes Lions International Festival. And I have to say, it’s memorable.

But it’s memorable for all the wrong reasons.

Unfortunately, it’s all too easy to find the wrong people. And if you do, nothing’s quite as dispiriting to the internet entrepeneur as the five people you meet in online marketing hell.
